Labiaplasty NJ

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure in which the labia are reduced or made smaller. This is the only treatment for the condition known as labial hypertrophy. Labial hypertrophy refers to abnormal height of the labia minora or inner lips of the vulva. Typically measuring more than 5 cm (or 2 inches) in maximum height, hypertrophic or excessively redundant labia can produce problems with hygiene, difficulty inserting a tampon, or discomfort wearing jeans or tight fitting clothing. Occasionally, the labia can protrude through swimsuits producing a penis-like shape. Many women feel significant embarrassment due to this issue.

The corrective surgical procedure is performed in the operating room under deep anesthesia, given both via IV and local routes. The surgery usually takes less than one hour and patients go home from the hospital later the same day. Prescription pain medication is given for post-operative discomfort. Swelling normally persists for up to 2 weeks, although some degree of swelling can last longer. Most patients can return to work or school within 3 days of having the procedure.

While this operation is often performed well by plastic surgeons, gynecologists are significantly more familiar with this part of the anatomy and are trained surgeons for the female genital system.
